No Peace Without Honor!: The Dutch War 1672–1678
No Peace Without Honor!: The Dutch War 1672–1678 is a strategic two-player game covering the early wars of Louis XIV and the dramatic struggle that transformed a limited conflict into a continent-wide war. Using the acclaimed No Peace Without Spain system, players command the competing alliances as they fight for military dominance, political influence, and diplomatic advantage across Europe.
In 1668, Louis XIV was forced to accept peace terms that he regarded as deeply unsatisfactory. Although France retained Lille, the Dutch Republic had played a central role in limiting French ambitions. Determined to avenge this perceived betrayal, Louis carefully prepared a new campaign. Through diplomacy, he isolated the Dutch by separating them from key allies, before launching his invasion in 1672.
What was expected to be a swift and decisive war quickly evolved into a much broader conflict. England joined the struggle at sea, Austria and Spain became involved, and Europe entered a prolonged period of warfare that would shape the balance of power for decades.
Players must guide either France or the opposing coalition through military campaigns, diplomatic negotiations, naval warfare, and political challenges. Victory depends not only on battlefield success but also on managing alliances, maintaining public support, and coping with growing war weariness at home. Mounting political and economic pressures may force nations to negotiate peace long before their strategic objectives have been achieved.
The game introduces additional historical leaders, including the young William of Orange, the renowned French commanders Turenne and Condé, and even Louis XIV himself. New event cards recreate important developments such as colonial conflicts, the Anglo-Dutch naval war, and the Ottoman threat to Austria, ensuring that no two games unfold in exactly the same way.
While fully playable as a stand-alone game, No Peace Without Honor! can also be linked with Nine Years War and No Peace Without Spain to recreate the entire series of Louis XIV's wars from 1668 to 1713 in one epic grand campaign.
