The Last Gamble: The Ardennes Offensive, December 1944 – Designer Signature Edition
The Last Gamble: The Ardennes Offensive, December 1944 – Designer Signature Edition brings back Danny S. Parker's acclaimed operational wargame in a thoroughly revised and expanded edition. Originally published in 1989, this classic simulation of the Battle of the Bulge has been completely remastered, correcting previous issues while adding new research, enhanced rules, and larger components to create the definitive version of this historic campaign.
The game recreates Germany's final major offensive on the Western Front during the winter of 1944. Code-named Wacht am Rhein, the operation aimed to split the Allied armies, cross the Meuse River, and seize the vital port of Antwerp. Hitler believed capturing Antwerp could dramatically alter the course of the war. Instead, the Ardennes campaign became one of the most intense and decisive battles fought in Western Europe.
Designed at the operational level, The Last Gamble allows players to command the German and Allied forces during every phase of the Ardennes offensive. Despite its depth and historical detail, the system remains highly playable and rewards careful planning, sound logistics, and effective use of limited resources.
This Designer Signature Edition significantly expands and improves the original game. Terrain has been completely re-evaluated using both wartime sources and modern mapping tools, while the order of battle has been extensively updated using the latest historical research. British formations, U.S. armoured divisions, air assets, morale ratings, and artillery strengths have all received major revisions to provide an exceptionally accurate portrayal of the campaign.
A particular focus has been placed on capturing the unique character of the Ardennes fighting. Day and night operations are handled differently, realistic bridge capacities and uncertain demolitions affect movement, and specialised rules model fuel shortages, commandos, infiltration tactics, and the famous Kampfgruppe Peiper breakout attempts. Air operations, road congestion, and varying morale levels all play critical roles in determining success or failure.
The game includes multiple scenarios covering different stages of the campaign, from introductory engagements to the full historical offensive. Players can also explore alternative history through a compelling "what-if" scenario that examines the consequences of launching the German attack earlier than historically planned.
