Italy '43 - Fifth Army's Advance to the Gustav Line
Italy '43 - Fifth Army's Advance to the Gustav Line is a two-player operational wargame covering the Allied advance from Naples to the formidable Gustav Line during the final months of 1943. Continuing the campaign where Salerno '43 ends, players command either the advancing Allied Fifth Army or the German forces conducting a determined fighting withdrawal through the rugged terrain of southern Italy.
Following the Allied crossing of the Volturno River in October 1943, the campaign quickly transformed from a rapid advance into a gruelling struggle through mountains, valleys, and heavily defended positions. As the Germans fell back toward their prepared defensive lines, every ridge, village, and strategic crossroads became fiercely contested.
Built on the proven GMT 19xx-series system, Italy '43 combines accessible mechanics with historical depth. Supply, movement, combat, and command decisions all play a critical role as players attempt to outmanoeuvre their opponent across challenging terrain and shifting front lines.

About the Game:
The campaign portrayed in Italy '43 is often overshadowed by other operations of the Second World War, yet it remains one of the most demanding battles fought by Allied forces in Europe. After the success of the Salerno landings, the Allies pushed north expecting continued progress. Instead, they encountered a determined German defence that skillfully used Italy's mountainous terrain to slow every advance.
Players will relive key engagements such as the battles around San Pietro Infine, Monte Lungo, and Monte Camino, where difficult terrain and prepared defensive positions repeatedly frustrated Allied attacks. The German player must trade space for time while preserving combat power, whereas the Allied player must maintain momentum and break through successive defensive lines before the enemy can fully consolidate.
The game uses the same map and scale as Salerno '43 while incorporating several refinements and new rules. Features such as defensive line construction, mountain units, and enhanced attack options add additional historical flavour and strategic choices.
Scenarios Included:
Across the Volturno
The Barbara Line
The Mignano Gap
