The Fall of Tobruk: Rommel's Greatest Victory

£107.99

The Fall of Tobruk: Rommel's Greatest Victory is a strategic operational wargame that recreates one of the defining campaigns of the North African Campaign during the Second World War. Command either Erwin Rommel's Axis forces or General Neil Ritchie's British Eighth Army as they battle across the Gazala Line in May and June 1942, fighting for control of the vital fortress port of Tobruk.

Rather than simply updating the classic 1975 design, Compass Games has completely reimagined the system with revised orders of battle, an entirely new activation system, modernised combat mechanics, expanded air operations, and a beautifully redesigned map, creating a fresh experience for both veteran players and newcomers.

About the Game:

The Fall of Tobruk: Rommel's Greatest Victory recreates the fierce desert fighting that culminated in the capture of Tobruk during one of the most famous campaigns of the North African theatre. Axis forces, led by General Erwin Rommel and supported by the Afrika Korps and Italian formations, attempt to break through the heavily fortified Gazala Line, while the British Eighth Army and its British, South African, Indian, and Free French troops fight to halt the advance.

Players command brigades, regiments, battalions, and supporting formations across an expansive operational battlefield where mobility, timing, and coordination are every bit as important as raw combat strength. Preserving your army while achieving key objectives becomes just as important as winning individual engagements.

One of the game's defining features is its innovative Operations Phase. Instead of following a rigid sequence of movement, combat, artillery, and air strikes, players decide exactly when and how to activate their formations. Units can manoeuvre, attack, bombard enemy positions, or call in air support in whatever order best suits the evolving battlefield, creating a far more fluid and realistic representation of desert warfare.

The revised system also introduces new weather effects, improved air operations, updated combat resolution using ten-sided dice, and a formation activation system driven by chit pulls. Together, these mechanics recreate the uncertainty, rapid manoeuvre, and constant decision-making that characterised the North African campaign.

With a highly detailed order of battle, extensive historical research, and a wealth of operational choices, every game presents fresh challenges as both sides compete for control of Tobruk and the surrounding desert.
