Winter Fury: The Battle Of Tolvajärvi – Finland vs. the Soviet Union, 1939 is an operational-level wargame that recreates two of the most important Finnish victories of the Winter War. Command either the determined Finnish defenders or the advancing Soviet forces as you fight across the frozen forests of Eastern Karelia during the battles of Tolvajärvi and Ilomantsi. This Second Edition also includes the 1941 Finnish offensive fought across the same battlefield, adding further historical depth and replayability.
Using Avalanche Press's Command & Control variable impulse system, the game captures the contrasting strengths of the Finnish and Soviet armies while recreating the uncertainty, harsh conditions, and tactical challenges of winter warfare.

About the Game:
At the end of November 1939, the Soviet Union launched its invasion of Finland, expecting a swift victory. Instead, Finnish forces mounted determined resistance that surprised the world and inflicted a series of costly defeats on the Red Army.
One of the most significant engagements took place around Tolvajärvi and Ilomantsi, where Soviet divisions advanced through the forests of Eastern Karelia against vastly outnumbered Finnish defenders. Reinforced by Colonel Paavo Talvela and inspired by determined leadership, Finnish troops halted the Soviet advance before launching a successful counterattack that destroyed the Soviet 139th Rifle Division and routed additional enemy forces.
The game recreates these dramatic operations while also including scenarios covering the 1941 Finnish offensive fought across the same terrain. Every turn uses the innovative Command & Control variable impulse system, where activation markers are drawn from a shared pool. Finnish forces generally activate more frequently, reflecting their superior mobility, initiative, and ability to operate effectively in dense forests. Soviet forces rely on overwhelming numbers, powerful artillery, tanks, and armoured cars, but coordinating large formations under difficult conditions presents its own challenges.
