Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion
Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is a fully cooperative fantasy campaign game of tactical combat for 1–4 players, set before the events of the original Gloomhaven. Designed as a more accessible introduction to the acclaimed Gloomhaven system, it retains the tactical decisions, character development and campaign-driven adventure of the original while making it considerably easier to learn and quicker to get onto the table.
You are a member of the Jaws of the Lion, one of Gloomhaven’s notorious mercenary groups. When the less fortunate inhabitants of the city begin mysteriously disappearing, your band is hired to investigate. What initially appears to be another job soon develops into something far more dangerous, drawing the group into a campaign filled with difficult battles, unexpected discoveries and important choices.
Combat is card-driven and dice-free, with each character using a unique deck of ability cards. Choosing which abilities to play, managing initiative and deciding when to use your most powerful actions are all crucial. Cards are a limited resource, so reckless play can leave a character exhausted before the objective has been completed. Working together and finding effective combinations between the different characters is often the key to surviving tougher encounters.
Four Unique Playable Characters
The campaign introduces four new mercenaries, each offering a distinct style of play:
Valrath Red Guard – A resilient close-combat fighter particularly suited to defence and controlling groups of enemies.
Inox Hatchet – A powerful ranged attacker capable of dealing significant damage from a distance.
Human Voidwarden – A support-focused character who can influence allies and manipulate enemies.
Quatryl Demolitionist – A hard-hitting melee specialist who can use and destroy obstacles to gain an advantage on the battlefield.
All four characters can also be used with the original Gloomhaven game, giving existing players additional character options for their campaigns.
A More Accessible Gloomhaven Experience
One of the biggest changes in Jaws of the Lion is its learn-as-you-play approach. The opening five scenarios gradually introduce the game's rules and mechanics, allowing new players to learn while actually playing rather than having to master the entire ruleset before beginning.
Several of the more complicated elements found in the original game have also been streamlined or removed. The result is a smoother introduction to Gloomhaven while retaining the strategic depth and challenging decision-making that made the original game so popular.
Setup has been simplified as well. Instead of assembling numerous cardboard map tiles, the scenario books themselves become the playing surface. Simply open the book to the appropriate scenario, add the required miniatures, standees and terrain elements, and you are ready to begin.
A 25-Scenario Campaign
The campaign features 25 scenarios filled with tactical encounters, challenges and story developments as the Jaws of the Lion investigate the disappearances taking place throughout the city.
Players face 16 different monster types, each with their own standees and decks, including new enemies and powerful bosses. Fully automated enemy behaviour means that no player needs to take the role of a traditional Gamemaster or control the opposition.
The campaign can be enjoyed solo or with up to four players, with encounters adapting to different player counts. This makes it possible to continue the adventure even when the full group cannot make it to every session.
