Fleet Commander: Nimitz (2nd Edition)
Fleet Commander: Nimitz (2nd Edition) is a solitaire strategic wargame that places you in command of U.S. forces in the Pacific during World War II. Taking on the role of Admiral Chester Nimitz, you must guide the United States from the aftermath of Pearl Harbor through to final victory in 1945.
Part of DVG’s Commander series, this title shifts the focus to large-scale naval warfare while maintaining a strong balance between strategic planning and tactical decision-making.
This game includes:
One large mounted full-colour map (25.5" x 22", 6 panels)
Eight full-colour countersheets
One battle map board (11" x 17")
Player log sheet
Rulebook
One 10-sided die
Key features:
Fully solitaire gameplay
Covers the entire Pacific War from 1942 to 1945
Four linked or standalone campaigns
Strategic movement combined with tactical combat resolution
Historically based units including ships, air groups, and land forces
High replayability through campaign system
About the game:
At the outset, the United States faces a dire situation following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Japanese forces dominate the Pacific, and early campaigns are marked by a series of difficult setbacks. As the war progresses, you must stabilise the front, rebuild your strength, and begin pushing back across vast ocean distances.
The game spans four campaigns—1942, 1943, 1944, and 1945—each representing a different phase of the conflict. These can be played individually or linked together to experience the full progression of the war.
Success depends on managing both the broader strategic picture and individual engagements. You will deploy fleets across the map to secure objectives, while also resolving battles that require careful positioning and timing. Every decision impacts your ability to maintain momentum and control key regions.
Units are represented with a high level of historical detail. Naval forces include individual carriers, battleships, and task groups, while air units and land forces reflect the real formations used during the conflict. This adds both authenticity and tactical variety to each campaign.
In addition to naval operations, the game incorporates a streamlined system for land combat, allowing you to conduct island assaults as part of your overall strategy.
With a flexible system and multiple campaign paths, each playthrough offers a different challenge, making it a highly replayable experience for both new and experienced players.
Game details:
Players: 1 (solitaire)
Playing time: Scenario dependent
Complexity: Medium
Solitaire suitability: High
