Fields of Fire: The Bulge Campaign

£30.00

Fields of Fire: The Bulge Campaign is an expansion for the Fields of Fire solitaire wargame system, following the U.S. 9th Infantry Regiment, known as the “Manchus,” of the 2nd Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge. Covering the period from 13 December 1944 to 8 January 1945, the campaign recreates seven challenging missions as American forces fight through the forests, villages and heavily defended positions of the Ardennes.

Following their earlier operations in Normandy, the Manchus took part in the assault on the French port of Brest before moving east towards the German border. By October 1944, the 2nd Infantry Division had reached the Schnee Eifel region near St. Vith, Belgium, where it spent several weeks rebuilding its strength and preparing for further operations against the Siegfried Line.

On 13 December, the division launched a new offensive towards the Wahlerscheid crossroads. Just three days later, Germany began its major Ardennes offensive, forcing the Americans to abandon their original plans and respond to a rapidly deteriorating situation. The Manchus soon found themselves fighting defensive battles against German infantry and armoured formations before eventually returning to the offensive as the German advance lost momentum.

This expansion introduces a new terrain deck representing the forests, open fields and villages of the Ardennes, together with additional American and German units, weapons and battlefield obstacles. The seven missions follow the regiment through some of its most demanding engagements of the winter campaign.

This expansion includes:

  • 1 Campaign Booklet

  • 1 Historical Notes Booklet

  • 1 Terrain Deck of 55 Cards

  • 1 Countersheet with 176 Counters

  • 1 Double-Sided 8.5" × 11" Player Aid Card featuring Vehicle Tables and German Squad Breakdowns

Key Features:

  • Historical campaign covering the Battle of the Bulge from December 1944 to January 1945

  • Designed for solitaire tactical gameplay using the established Fields of Fire system

About the Game:

The Battle of the Bulge began on 16 December 1944, when German forces launched a major surprise offensive through the Ardennes. The attack threatened to break through the American front and disrupt Allied operations in Western Europe.

For the 9th Infantry Regiment, the German offensive came at a particularly difficult moment. Having begun an attack against the Siegfried Line only days earlier, the Manchus were forced to withdraw and establish new defensive positions as German armoured formations advanced towards the strategically important Elsenborn Ridge area.

Fields of Fire: The Bulge Campaign follows these events through seven connected missions, beginning with the fighting at Wahlerscheid and continuing through the defensive battles around Rocherath and Krinkelt before moving into the American counteroffensive of early January 1945.

Players must deal with changing terrain, fortified German positions, armoured threats and the challenges of coordinating infantry and supporting weapons. The campaign moves from offensive operations to desperate defensive fighting and back to renewed attacks, reflecting the changing situation faced by the regiment.

Seven Historical Missions

The campaign includes seven missions based on engagements fought by the Manchus during the Battle of the Bulge.

  • Wahlerscheid Crossroads – “Heartbreak Crossroads” (13–16 December 1944): The Manchus advance towards the German border, encountering Siegfried Line bunkers, pillboxes, mines and wire obstacles. Difficult weather and determined resistance slow the American attack before a night infiltration helps overcome the position.

  • “Purple Heart Corner” (17–18 December 1944): With the German Ardennes offensive gaining ground, the regiment withdraws towards Rocherath and Krinkelt. American troops establish hurried defensive positions at a crossroads and face attacks from elements of the 12th SS Panzer Division.

  • “Cat and Mouse Street Fight at Krinkelt” (18–19 December 1944): German forces enter the twin villages, leading to close-range fighting between infantry and tanks. American defenders use bazookas and available cover to prevent the Germans from securing their positions.

  • “Last Attacks on Krinkelt” (19 December 1944): As German armoured formations attempt to bypass the villages, Volksgrenadier units continue attacking the American positions. The Manchus must withstand these final assaults before moving back towards Camp Elsenborn.

  • “Attack on Büllingen – Hill 629” (30 December 1944): With the German offensive losing strength, the Manchus return to offensive operations. Advancing from the Elsenborn Ridge area, they attack positions held by Panzergrenadiers and Volksgrenadiers following the withdrawal of heavily depleted German armoured units.

  • “Attack on Schöneseiffen” (2 January 1945): The regiment advances eastwards beyond the Wahlerscheid crossroads towards Schöneseiffen. German defenders, supported by assault guns and anti-aircraft weapons, must be overcome through a coordinated infantry and tank attack.

  • “Scheuren, Bronsfeld and Schleiden” (5–8 January 1945): The final mission follows the American advance through villages and mixed terrain towards Schleiden, as German resistance gradually weakens and the regiment completes this phase of its winter operations.

Together, these missions provide a varied campaign, with each engagement presenting different terrain, enemy formations and tactical objectives.

New Terrain, Units and Battlefield Challenges

The expansion introduces a dedicated 55-card Ardennes Terrain Deck, allowing players to recreate the wooded countryside, open fields and villages encountered during the winter fighting.

The new countersheet adds equipment and formations relevant to the campaign, including an American heavy machine gun platoon, Bangalore torpedoes for dealing with obstacles, anti-tank mines and wire entanglements.

German forces are expanded with tanks, assault guns, Panzergrenadiers and Volksgrenadiers, providing a range of opponents across the seven missions.

These additions reflect the different types of combat experienced by the Manchus, from attacks against prepared fortifications to close-range fighting in villages and defensive actions against German armour.

Continuing the Fields of Fire Campaign

The Bulge Campaign continues the story of the 9th Infantry Regiment following its operations in Fields of Fire: Volume I.

After the Normandy campaign, the regiment participated in the capture of Brest before moving east through France and reaching the German border in October 1944. A relatively quiet period of patrols and replacements followed, allowing the division to prepare for its next offensive.

The December fighting brought a dramatic change in circumstances. The Manchus were first required to attack the Siegfried Line, then defend against the German breakthrough, before resuming offensive operations as the Battle of the Bulge turned in the Allies' favour.

The campaign's historical progression provides a connected series of tactical challenges while introducing new terrain and units to the existing Fields of Fire system.
