Commands & Colors Medieval Expansion 1: Crusades Mid-Eastern Battles 1
Commands & Colors Medieval Expansion 1: Crusades Mid-Eastern Battles 1 takes Richard Borg's popular Commands & Colors: Medieval system forward more than 500 years to the Crusades, introducing new armies, battlefield tactics and historical scenarios from the struggle between Crusader and Middle Eastern forces.
As the first expansion for Commands & Colors: Medieval, it focuses on major engagements from the earlier Crusades, when heavily armoured European knights confronted the experienced mounted warriors and infantry of the Middle East. Although the two sides often relied on very different approaches to warfare, both possessed strengths that could prove decisive when used effectively.
The expansion introduces 20 historical battle scenarios, eight new unit types and additional rules that reflect the changing nature of medieval warfare. From the powerful charges of Crusader knights to the mobility and missile tactics of Middle Eastern cavalry, players must adapt their strategies to the capabilities of their armies and the terrain on which they fight.
The familiar Commands & Colors system remains at the heart of the game, with Command cards determining available orders and battle dice resolving combat. New unit abilities, tactical rules and Inspired Actions provide additional depth while retaining the accessible gameplay of the original system.

About the Game:
The Crusades brought European armies into prolonged conflict with the established powers of the Middle East, producing a series of battles in which different military traditions and tactics came into direct competition.
European Crusader armies relied heavily on armoured knights, whose charges could break enemy formations when properly supported. Their opponents often made greater use of mobile cavalry, mounted archers and flexible tactics designed to disrupt and weaken an advancing enemy.
Crusades Mid-Eastern Battles 1 recreates these encounters through the Commands & Colors: Medieval system, allowing players to command armies with distinct strengths and weaknesses.
While cavalry remains an important part of the battlefield, infantry has a more significant role than in many earlier medieval engagements. Improved weapons, defensive tactics and greater battlefield experience allow infantry formations to withstand cavalry attacks and respond effectively.
Players must consider how to coordinate different troop types, use terrain to their advantage and make the best use of the Command cards available to them.
New Unit Types
The expansion introduces eight new unit types, giving Crusader and Middle Eastern armies additional battlefield capabilities and tactical options.
New units include Crossbow Infantry, Foot Knight Infantry, Turcopole Light Bow Cavalry, Heavy Knight Cavalry, and Heavy Military Order Knight Cavalry.
These additions bring greater variety to the battles, allowing players to explore the different strengths and fighting styles of the opposing armies.
New Rules and Battlefield Tactics
Crusades Mid-Eastern Battles 1 expands the original rules with several mechanics reflecting the military practices of the Crusading period.
Relics introduce an additional historical element to the battlefield, while Retreat and Panic rules add further considerations when units come under pressure.
Crusader Impetuous Pursuit reflects the tendency of victorious knights to continue advancing after an enemy, sometimes creating opportunities but also exposing them to danger.
Cavalry Interpenetration allows charging mounted formations to pass through friendly stationary infantry, providing additional flexibility when coordinating attacks.
Middle Eastern armies benefit from tactics such as Feigned Flight, Light Cavalry Swarm and Shower Shooting, representing the use of mobility, deception and sustained missile attacks to weaken enemy formations.
These new mechanics encourage players to employ historically appropriate tactics rather than relying on the same approach for every army.
Inspired Actions and Army Differences
The expansion introduces new and revised Inspired Actions that reflect the characteristics of the armies involved.
Crusader forces receive abilities suited to their heavily armoured troops and aggressive battlefield tactics.
The Middle Eastern armies are represented through three distinct groups:
Turkish Armies
Fatimid Armies
Ayyubid Armies
Each has access to Inspired Actions that reflect its military traditions and battlefield capabilities.
The interaction between these abilities, the Command cards and the different unit types gives each battle its own tactical challenges.
Although the basic rules remain familiar to players of Commands & Colors: Medieval, the new mechanics introduce additional decisions without significantly increasing the complexity of the system.
Twenty Historical Crusader Battles
The expansion includes 20 scenarios covering important engagements from the earlier Crusades.
These battles explore the changing fortunes of Crusader and Middle Eastern forces, from the early successes of the First Crusade to later confrontations involving powerful regional armies.
The scenarios include:
Nicaea (1097)
Dorylaeum (1097) – Phase 1: Defendable Base Camp
Dorylaeum (1097) – Phase 2: Attack on the Camp
Dorylaeum (1097) – Raymond's Flanking Attack
Lake of Antioch (1098)
Antioch (1098)
Ascalon (1099)
First Ramla (1101)
Second Ramla (1102)
Harran (1104)
Third Ramla (1105)
Tell Danith / Sarmin (1115)
Ager Sanguinis – Field of Blood (1119)
Hab (1119)
Harim (1164)
Montgisard (1177)
Hattin (1187) – Raymond III Escapes
Hattin (1187) – Balian's Rearguard
Hattin (1187) – King Guy's Centre Column
Hattin (1187) – Final Stand
Each scenario provides a historical battlefield arrangement, with terrain and unit deployments reflecting the circumstances of the engagement.
Some battles are divided into separate phases or actions, allowing players to explore different parts of a larger confrontation.
The Commands & Colors System
The expansion retains the established gameplay of Richard Borg's Commands & Colors series.
Command cards determine which sections of the battlefield can be activated, requiring players to work within the orders available to them rather than moving every unit freely.
Battle dice resolve combat, while terrain, unit characteristics and leadership influence the outcome of engagements.
This system introduces uncertainty and encourages players to plan carefully, particularly when coordinating infantry and cavalry attacks or responding to unexpected enemy movements.
The flexible battlefield scale allows scenarios to represent engagements of different sizes while maintaining a consistent approach to movement and combat.
Victory depends on recognising the strengths of individual formations, exploiting the terrain and making effective use of available commands.
